Almost 30 years ago, the Jeep® Grand Cherokee began its journey as the most award-winning SUV in history. After four groundbreaking generations of this vehicle, countless industry awards, and more than 7 million vehicles sold worldwide, the Jeep brand now once again has the highest expectations in the full-size SUV segment with the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L.
The latest generation of the car is designed and engineered to deliver an unrivaled combination of outstanding 4x4 capability, exemplary on-road refinement, premium exterior and interior design and workmanship with a host of advanced safety and technology features. The result is the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, with six or seven seats for the first time in history.
Legendary Jeep 4x4 capability
The Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers enhanced unmatched capability along with balanced on-road driving dynamics. It extends its legendary off-road capabilities with three 4x4 systems – Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited slip differential (eLSD). All three systems feature an active transmission that improves traction by shifting torque to the wheel with the most grip.
Quadra-Lift
The class-exclusive Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension, now with electronic adaptive damping, provides best-in-class ground clearance and fording. The system automatically adjusts the damper tuning to changing road conditions to increase comfort, stability and handling.
Selec-Terrain
The Grand Cherokee L's class-leading Selec-Terrain traction control system allows customers to select on-road and off-road settings for optimal 4x4 performance. This feature electronically coordinates up to six different powertrains, 4x4 torque distribution, braking and steering, steering and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shifting, transmission and traction control, stability control, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and steering sensitivity.
The completely new architecture brings first-class driving dynamics and durability
Jeep Grand Cherokee L has received a number of improvements that optimize ride, handling and lower noise levels, while reducing weight to save fuel. The new self-supporting structure along with three available 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II), available Quadra-Lift air suspension and standard Selec-Terrain traction control system enhance the Grand Cherokee's legendary 4x4 capabilities .
Award-winning power units
The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers customers a choice of two powerful, fuel-efficient and refined engines with performance for every driving situation.
3.6L V6 Pentastar
The all-aluminum Pentastar V-6 engine with a volume of 3.6 liters has an output of 293 horsepower and a torque of 352 N.m. The Pentastar V-6 engine is praised for its performance and overall refinement. Thanks to the 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks, it has a naturally smooth operation, which is enhanced by mounting all accessories directly to the engine block. A seven-time winner of the Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems award, the Pentastar V-6 engine is a compact powerplant that, for example, has an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head.
The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is rated for a towing force of up to 2,812 kg and an estimated range of almost 500 km in its class.
Standard on the Pentastar V-6 engine is fuel-efficient Start-Stop (ESS) technology. The ESS system has been improved and refined for the Grand Cherokee L. Changes include a pressure reserve element in the eight-speed transmission that delivers dedicated transmission fluid to the shift elements for a quick start when the engine is restarted. Improved powertrain controls and new starting technology minimize premature engine start-up with small movements of the driver's foot on the brake pedal. Its restart noise and vibration have been reduced thanks to redesigned controls and switchable engine mounts.
5.7L V8
Customers who want more power can also opt for the award-winning 5.7-liter V8 with 357 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque. It is supplied in a wide power range.
The Grand Cherokee L V-8 engine uses cylinder deactivation technology that deactivates four cylinders under light acceleration or highway driving. The system is active in an extended area with respect to previous generations and is imperceptible to the driver. Depending on the driving scenario, cylinder deactivation can reduce fuel consumption by 5 to 20 percent.
Underpinned by a cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder heads, the V-8 delivers power and efficiency with VVT timing and Fuel Saver (cylinder deactivation) technology. With Fuel Saver Technology, the engine control unit shuts off the fuel supply and ignition and closes the valves of the engine's four cylinders at low loads, such as highway driving, when full power is not required. When the driver steps on the gas pedal, the system immediately reactivates the deactivated cylinders.
The 5.7-liter V-8 engine has a best-in-class towing capacity of up to 3,266 kg.
Intelligent 4x4
New for the Grand Cherokee L 4x4 is front axle disconnection. If the vehicle detects that road conditions do not require four-wheel drive, disconnecting the front axle automatically switches the Grand Cherokee L to two-wheel drive, reducing drivetrain resistance and improving fuel economy. All-wheel drive automatically re-engages as soon as the vehicle detects the need for this change.
Interior
When designing the interior of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, the team's goal was to create one of the most technically advanced interiors in the industry. The next-generation interior evolves to create a more refined space with hand-crafted materials with attention to detail and modern equipment that blends perfectly with the reimagined modern exterior.
"The goal of the interior design team was to create a unique and distinctive space for the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. We looked at the overall design process with a broad lens that allowed us to use a new generation of Jeep interiors," said Chris Benjamin, director of interior design. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is synonymous with sophistication, our approach to the three-row version was to highlight distinctive details, hand-crafted materials and modern equipment that blend seamlessly with its tailored exterior.”
Chris Benjamin, Director of Interior Design
The rich mix of materials contrasts with the sophisticated design of the center console, which has been newly arranged and is now even more ergonomically accessible for the driver. The bright structural element elegantly frames the 10.1" display of the new generation of the new Uconnect 5 system. Also new is the 10.25" frameless digital instrument panel with almost two dozen different menus for the user to choose from, including driver assistance technologies such as adaptive cruise control, highway assistant, night vision, drowsy driver detection and display of speed limit signs.
To control the digital panel, the Grand Cherokee L is equipped with an all-new multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters. Summit trims come standard with an Absolute Oak leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the Summit Reserve package adds Waxed Walnut wood accents.
New streamlined cup holders allow for more space and storage in the front compartment, which can hold two wireless devices and features an optional wireless charger that can charge two devices simultaneously.
Jeep Grand Cherokee L is designed to maximize overall passenger comfort, delivering unsurpassed third-row seating capacity with increased trunk volume. The car's 121.7-inch (3,091 mm) wheelbase creates generous interior space and provides occupants with extensive, best-in-class second-row legroom.
The Grand Cherokee L offers more rear cargo space behind the second row of seats at 1,328 L. The third row seats are split 50/50 and can be easily folded down from the rear of the vehicle.
Camera with night vision
A night vision camera, available on the Overland and Summit trims, uses thermographic technology to extend the range of the Grand Cherokee L's headlights. Infrared sensors look for the heat traces of pedestrians and animals on the road in front of the vehicle up to 219 yards (200 meters). After they are found, a warning is drawn on the instrument panel directly in front of the driver with their position relative to the vehicle.
LED lighting
The Grand Cherokee L also offers a complete set of LED lighting. LED headlights deliver exceptional performance with a balanced light beam that minimizes glare from oncoming vehicles while doubling the light output directly in front of the vehicle to better illuminate the road ahead. The side lighting improves visibility when cornering and is activated either by turning the steering wheel or by activating the turn signals when the headlights are on.
